Hanging out in Virginia

Tuesday we got to Virginia and stopped at Prince William Forest Campground, not too far from Potomac Mills, which is one of the largest outlet malls I've ever been to. The campground is in Prince William County and still about 130 miles from Hampton where Ryan's family lives. It's a really quiet area with paved pads, wifi, and full hookups, but a little close quarters. We had to jury-rig our coach to make it fit the site.

Wednesday we headed on down to the Hampton area and decided to stay at Newport News Park Campground in Newport News. This park is a hidden gem that has been here forever, but we are just discovering it. There are 6 loops of campsites that are all wooded, shady, with various hookups. We got 50 amp with water and electricity for the senior discount price of $32/night. We are surprised that it isn't full, but think it might be the heat that is keeping folks away. However, we couldn't get reservations for Labor Day weekend so it must be pretty popular. It's the ideal place to stay to visit the plethora of tourist attractions in this area like Busch Gardens, Yorktown, Jamestown, and Colonial Williamsburg. Even though we didn't have sewer hookups, it was totally worth staying here We used the showers at the park and used their dump station midway through our stay. There are also very new laundry facilities where I managed to get about 6 loads done at once.

The kids came over and played in the playground area the first day. Thursday, Ryan brought over his 6-person tent and chairs and we cooked hamburgers, brats and s'mores. I shared some Maine Whoopie Pies that I bought in Freeport with the kids...there are so many flavors. We had peanut butter, orange creamcicle, maple, and everyone's favorite was the classic chocolate. Whoopie Pies are just round cakes with a creamy flavored fillings. Very popular in Maine and I found a store that had a huge assortment. Couldn't resist. We really got our sugar fix that night!

The next day we decided we should go to Busch Gardens amusement park but since it was very hot and humid, we chose to go in the evening when it should have been cooler. It was still pretty humid but the rides provided some breeze to keep us from melting. Everyone had a good time and Bruce went on anything Kaleb and Ryan would go on (five roller coasters, some with multiple loops). Kelsa and I were ok with land-based rides and Ellie got a kick out of bumper cars and merry-go-rounds. Deb was brave enough to go on a couple of daring roller coasters later in the evening. We slept good that night.

Saturday we hung out at the kids' house playing Xbox Wii-type games, and board games. Kelsa did my nails. The weather has just not been great for outdoor activities. Sunday we went to a church service by the lake in the park, followed by a service at Ryan's church. Breakfast/Lunch at Cracker Barrel rounded out the morning and dinner back at the house.

Monday we ate at 5 Guys,

Tuesday Ryan took Ellie to work with him and we took the other two out to lunch and then bought supplies at Home Depot and the craft stores for a pegboard wall organizer for Kelsa. Bruce fashioned it out of a sheet of pegboard and 1 x 2s so she could hang her craft supplies on the wall

Basically we're just spending the week enjoying our kids and grandkids before heading for home.
